Hand Biomechanics Lab DWD-232 Agee Digit Widget External Fixation System – New Kit
Hand Biomechanics Lab | Agee Digit Widget External Fixation System | New Kit | DWD-232
The Hand Biomechanics Lab DWD-232 is a highly specialized, patient-specific external fixation system designed for the progressive reduction and reversal of proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint flexion contractures. Invented by John Agee, M.D., the Digit Widget applies controlled, continuous skeletal extension torque directly to the bone structure of the finger. This mechanical torque gradually elongates shortened palmar soft tissues without generating the localized skin pressure necrosis, blistering, or range-of-motion restrictions common to traditional dynamic splinting or serial plaster casting.
The mechanical framework aligns directly with the PIP joint's anatomical axis of rotation. By transmitting extension forces directly through the skeleton via micro bone pins rather than compressing the dermal envelope, the system completely preserves active finger flexion. This allows patients to maintain basic hand function and participate in activities of daily living throughout the treatment lifecycle.
Complete Kit Architecture & Components
The DWD-232 is supplied as a comprehensive therapeutic setup divided into two distinct processing segments:
Pack A: Surgical Component Array (Arrives Factory Sterile)
-
Bone Pins (Kirschner Wires): Precision implant-grade stainless steel micro pins engineered for stable skeletal purchase.
-
Pre-Drills & Drill Guide: Sized calibration tools to ensure accurate parallel pin placement without structural bone damage.
-
Pin Block & Pivot Module: The primary external anchoring chassis that secures the implanted pins and provides a low-friction pivoting hinge.
-
Primary Hex Wrench (5/64 inch): Hand tool for clamping the structural locking mechanisms.
Pack B: Post-Surgery Assembly & Therapy Array
PROCESSING SAFETY NOTICE: The components within Pack B must NOT be autoclaved or subjected to high-temperature thermal sterilization, as they are fabricated from polymers and elastomeric compounds that will melt or delaminate.
-
Connector Assembly: The mechanical linkage that snaps over the Pack A pin block pivot to bridge the finger frame with the hand cuff.
-
Neoprene Cuffs: Two different-sized, reversible cuffs (fitting both right and left hands) to comfortably wrap the hand and manage postoperative surgical dressings.
-
Calibrated Elastic Bands: Dedicated tension-graded elastics used to establish and adjust the active extension torque.
-
Metacarpophalangeal (MP) Flexion Strap: An auxiliary control strap designed to hold the MP joint in slight flexion, concentrating the extension force directly at the PIP joint and preventing compensatory MP hyperextension.
