Covidien 4DFEN Shiley Tracheostomy Tube Cuffed w/ Disposable Inner Cannula
• Model: 4DFEN
• 5.0mm I.D
• 9.4mm O.D
• Fenestrated
The Shiley 4DFEN fenestrated tracheostomy tube is crafted for adult patients who require a cuffed tube but also may benefit from the ability to phonate, cough effectively, or breathe partially through their upper airway. The fenestrated opening in the outer tube allows airflow up through the vocal cords when the inner cannula is removed or when a plug is used, thereby assisting speech and possibly facilitating weaning from the trach. The cuff allows sealing when needed (for ventilation or airway protection) while maintaining flexibility for upper airway use. The disposable inner cannula lets caregivers remove or replace the cannula to manage secretions more easily without removing the entire tube, which improves hygiene and reduces risk of blockage.
In terms of patient‑comfort and handling, the tube has a soft, swivel flange that conforms to neck movements, helping reduce pressure on the stoma site. The obturator (used for insertion) is smooth and rounded to ease placement. Size 4 DFEN has a relatively moderate outer diameter (9.4 mm) and tube length (62 mm), balancing the need for airway flow with minimizing bulk or trauma. The cuff height (~20 mm) is designed to seal without exerting excessive pressure on tracheal tissue (i.e. maintaining a low‑pressure, high‑volume characteristic) to reduce injury risk.
Clinically, the 4DFEN is well suited for patients who are progressing toward decannulation or speaking, but still need the protections a cuff offers. During times when speech is desired, the fenestration and appropriate use of plugs or removal of the inner cannula permit airflow over the vocal cords. When ventilation is required or aspiration risk is high, the cuff can be inflated. The disposable inner cannula simplifies maintenance and reduces infection risk, but staff must monitor for obstruction, cuff pressures, and proper positioning. As with any fenestrated trach tube, care must be taken to ensure the fenestration is aligned properly, that plugging is managed appropriately, and that patients are closely monitored for airway patency and comfort.
This medical supply or implant item is securely packaged within its original manufacturer's packaging, which remains undamaged. The inner and outer packaging is intact, ensuring the product's integrity and suitability for medical use.
