The 3M PRE1055US Prevena Peel & Place Dressing is part of the closed-incision negative pressure therapy (ciNPT) platform intended for post-surgical incision management on linear wounds. Its 20 cm length makes it suitable for moderate-length surgical incisions. The integrated, peel-and-place design means clinicians apply a single continuous dressing over the incision, sealing it to the skin around the margins while concurrently applying negative pressure therapy. Because of its construction (foam bolster + interface layer + adhesive film), it not only manages exudate but also helps promote apposition of the incision edges by distributing the suction force evenly.
Functionally, the dressing delivers a constant –125 mmHg negative pressure (for up to 7 days) to the surgical site. This negative pressure pulls fluid (seroma, blood, interstitial fluid) away from the incision, thereby reducing edema and potential fluid accumulation under the closed incision. The foam bolster channels the suction toward the incision, while the skin interface layer wicks fluid from superficial surfaces, helping maintain a relatively dry tissue interface. The inclusion of ionic silver (0.019 %) in the interface layer offers an antimicrobial benefit by inhibiting bacterial colonization on the dressing surface.
Clinically, the Prevena dressing is used in scenarios where minimizing surgical site complications (such as seroma formation, superficial infection, incision dehiscence) is critical. Because it provides a sealed barrier against external contaminants and continuous fluid management, it seeks to create a more controlled wound environment compared to traditional dressings. The dressing is compatible with dedicated Prevena therapy systems or other NPWT units, enabling automated suction management and canister drainage. Its single-use sterile configuration simplifies handling and reduces cross-contamination risk. Additionally, patients may shower with the dressing in place (when properly sealed) under many protocols.
