The C0205 EnCap pericardial patch is a small, durable biologic implant intended for use in delicate or limited-area cardiac or vascular repairs. Its modest dimensions (2 × 5 cm) make it particularly suitable where a smaller patch is needed — for example, in congenital repairs, small septal defects, leaflet reinforcement, or in portions of annular repairs where material bulk must be minimized. The patch’s anti-calcification EnCap AC treatment provides a theoretical advantage in longevity by attempting to reduce the propensity for calcific degeneration, a known risk in biologic implants over time.
In terms of handling, the patch is “ready to use” (i.e. requires no lengthy rinsing or preparation in the operating room), which can save precious time and reduce handling complexity. Its bovine pericardium core material is valued for its pliability, strength, and suturability — it can conform to curved or complex anatomic surfaces, yet maintain its integrity under suture stress. The glutaraldehyde fixation adds stability and reduces the risk of structural changes like patch shrinkage or distortion once implanted.
Clinically, surgeons might choose the C0205 patch in scenarios where a small reinforcement or patching scaffold is required, but where long-term durability and resistance to calcification are also desired. Its biologic origin and anti-calcification design aim to strike a balance between flexibility / biocompatibility and durability. However, as with all biologic implants, success depends heavily on surgical technique, suture selection, hemodynamic stress, and patient factors (e.g. calcium metabolism, inflammatory milieu).
