The Abbott / SJM C0510 Pericardial Patch with EnCap Technology is a surgical implant patch fabricated from bovine pericardium and treated with a proprietary anti-calcification process. The EnCap AC treatment is designed to “cap” unreacted aldehyde groups, reducing potential cytotoxicity or immune activation, and thereby aiming to slow or resist calcific degeneration over time. Because the patch is glutaraldehyde-fixed, it retains structural strength and resists undesirable dimensional changes such as shrinkage or aneurysm formation under stress. The patch is supplied “ready to use,” meaning no additional rinsing or special preparation is required in the operating room, which aids in workflow efficiency.
From a handling standpoint, the C0510 patch is described as soft and pliable, allowing it to conform to anatomical curvature and be sutured with minimal leakage along suture lines. Its dimensions (5 × 10 cm) make it suitable for moderately sized repairs, such as reinforcing patches in vascular or cardiac tissue. Because the patch is relatively thin (0.20–0.40 mm), it balances flexibility and durability. The EnCap treatment also aims to support endothelialization, so that in vivo, the patch becomes more naturally integrated into the host tissue.
Clinically, surgeons may choose the C0510 patch in repairs requiring durable, biocompatible reinforcement—such as in annular reconstruction (e.g. mitral ring enlargement), septal defect closures, leaflet repairs under infective conditions, or patching in vascular reconstructions. The anti-calcification treatment is intended to prolong the functional lifespan of the patch by resisting calcific degeneration, which is a key concern in cardiovascular implants. Because the patch is supplied in a sterile, implantable form with minimal intraoperative prep needs, it supports efficient operative procedures. As with any implantable device, adherence to proper surgical techniques, suture handling, and patient follow-up are critical for long-term success.
