Covidien 8UN85R Shiley 8.5mm ID Adult Flexible Tracheostomy Tube Cuffless

• Model: 8UN85R
• 8.5mm I.D.
• 12.2mm O.D.
• Length: 79mm

The Shiley 8UN85R is a large‐bore, cuffless adult tracheostomy tube designed to provide a stable airway while minimizing some of the risks associated with cuffed tubes, such as pressure injury to the tracheal mucosa. Its internal diameter of 8.5 mm affords relatively high airflow, which helps lower resistance during ventilation, speaking, or spontaneous breathing, particularly when there is no cuff sealing. The external diameter is 12.2 mm, and the tube length (79 mm) is suitable for adult anatomy. The uncuffed design is intended for patients who are not at high risk for aspiration and/or when one desires to allow airflow past the tube for phonation or weaning from mechanical ventilation.

The tube includes a reusable inner cannula, which allows for periodic cleaning or replacement without removing the outer cannula from the tracheostomy stoma. This is a useful feature for long‑term tracheostomy care, as the inner cannula is often the part that becomes obstructed with secretions and biofilm. The material is a flexible, medical‑grade PVC that is softer than rigid tubes, intended to conform better to a patient’s anatomy, reduce irritation, and potentially improve comfort. The tube is supplied sterile and is intended for single‑patient use, though parts like the inner cannula may be reused per institutional cleaning protocols.

Clinically, the 8UN85R is suited for adult patients who have stable airways without the need for a cuff to prevent aspiration, or where speech or weaning are priorities. Its large inner diameter aids ventilator performance and reduces work of breathing. Caregiver protocols must include routine cleaning of the inner cannula, regular assessment of tube patency, securing the flange properly to avoid movement or dislodgement, and monitoring the stoma site. Because it’s uncuffed, one must manage risk of aspiration and ensure proper fit to minimize leaks and optimize patient comfort and safety.

This medical supply or implant item is securely packaged within its original manufacturer's packaging, which remains undamaged. The inner and outer packaging is intact, ensuring the product's integrity and suitability for medical use.
