1. Design & Technical Specifications
The APEX Monorail catheter features a semi-compliant OptiLEAP™ balloon sized at 3.5 mm diameter × 20 mm length and is built on a 142 cm Monorail (rapid‑exchange) catheter platform. The device includes platinum–iridium radiopaque marker bands at each balloon edge to enhance precise visualization under fluoroscopy. Internally, it incorporates the Bi‑Segment™ inner shaft, combining a stiff proximal section for reliable pushability with a flexible distal section that enhances trackability through complex vascular anatomy.
2. Performance & Engineering Enhancements
The APEX family delivers significant performance gains: bench testing reveals up to 35% more pushability and 35% tip flexibility compared to the prior Maverick catheter series, improving crossing performance in tight lesions. The Monorail platform also benefits from the TruFeel™ hypotube, which enhances kink resistance and catheter integrity. Combined with the OptiLEAP™ balloon’s reduced waist profile, these features ensure consistent and controlled dilation while limiting vessel trauma.
3. Clinical Applications & Benefits
This Boston Scientific catheter is indicated for both pre- and post-dilation in percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), aimed at treating stenoses in native coronary arteries or grafts, and also supports post-dilatation of balloon-expandable stents. The 3.5 mm × 20 mm configuration is well-suited for medium-sized lesions, offering ample surface area for effective vessel remodeling. The Monorail design enhances procedural efficiency through rapid catheter exchanges, making this device a solid choice for complex anatomies where deliverability, radiopacity, and controlled dilation are critical.
