The ConMed LightWave IA‑2379 Ablator is a monopolar electrosurgical instrument designed for arthroscopic or endoscopic soft tissue ablation, coagulation, and modification tasks. Its 90° angled tip allows access to areas perpendicular to the shaft direction—useful in confined joint spaces (e.g. shoulder, elbow, wrist). The 3.2 mm diameter gives a balance between rigidity (to transmit torque and force) and minimal profile (to reduce tissue disruption). The three‑rib electrode design helps deliver energy uniformly across the contact surface to facilitate effective ablation or coagulation of soft tissue.
The device is controlled via buttons on its integrated molded handpiece, allowing the user to alternate between cut/ablation and coagulation modes without needing to switch instruments. Because it's monopolar, it requires a return (grounding) electrode in the patient circuit to complete the electrical path. The LightWave line (including IA‑2379) is intended for use with most standard electrosurgical generators (i.e. is generator‑agnostic) under recommended wattage settings.
In clinical application, surgeons use the IA‑2379 for tasks such as resection of soft tissues, smoothing or sculpting surfaces, or managing bleeding through coagulation—all while working in a fluid (saline or lactated Ringer’s) arthroscopic environment. Its angled design helps reach recesses, overhangs, or undercuts in joint spaces that a straight probe might not reach easily. As a sterile, disposable instrument, the IA‑2379 is intended for single procedures to maintain performance and avoid sterilization concerns.
