The PlumePen Pro surgical smoke evacuation pencil is designed to combine precision electrosurgery with effective smoke evacuation at the source — capturing surgical plume right at the blade to improve visibility, maintain a clearer surgical site, and reduce exposure of OR personnel to harmful by‑products of tissue ablation. The slim, ergonomic handpiece mimics the feel of a standard electrosurgical pencil, thus minimizing surgeon learning curve or adaptation while enhancing comfort through its textured grip and 360° swivel connection. The transparent removable capture port adds functionality by allowing electrode replacements (for longer electrodes) and x‑ray detectability for safety.

Because surgical smoke contains ultrafine particles, chemical vapors, aerosols and possibly biological contaminants, integrating a dedicated smoke evacuation channel into the electrosurgical pencil itself offers clear workflow advantages. The PlumePen Pro’s 3/8‑in tubing and adapter to a standard 7/8‑in port allow seamless connection to many surgical smoke evacuator systems. The lightweight, flexible tubing reduces wrist fatigue and helps maintain the hand’s natural motion during lengthy procedures. The product literature notes that this design can achieve higher flow and better performance compared with older, bulkier smoke evacuation pencils.

In practical surgical settings, the PlumePen Pro aids in maintaining a clearer operative field, reducing the need for separate smoke capture devices or cumbersome attachments. The combination of blade and integrated evacuation means fewer connections and potentially fewer interruptions or delays in instrument hand‑offs. Its compatibility with standard ESU blades and electrode lengths means it can easily be integrated into existing OR setups. When used properly within a surgical plume management protocol (including downstream filtration and evacuation systems), it contributes to safety, ergonomics and surgical efficiency.
