The Shiley 3.5PEF cuffless pediatric tracheostomy tube is designed to provide a reliable, safe airway for pediatric patients who require tracheostomy but do not need an inflatable cuff. Because it is cuffless, it allows for more natural airflow around the tube and can support phonation (voice production), making it a better choice for children who are not being ventilated with high positive pressures or at risk of aspiration. Its 3.5 mm inner diameter is sized for smaller airways, and the overall length (40 mm) ensures that the tube reaches past the tracheostomy stoma to an appropriate depth without being excessively long.
Material and structural design are tailored for comfort and minimized tissue irritation. The flange (the part that sits against the skin) is soft and transparent, permitting better visualization of the stoma site and surrounding skin, which helps in detecting irritation in early stages. There are specific design features such as a “comfort recess” at the bottom of the connector, and a tape‑tie recess on the flange, to reduce pressure points and to allow secure fixation without excess contact or rubbing against delicate skin. Also, the non‑DEHP plasticizer construction reduces exposure to potentially harmful plasticizers, aligning with safety standards in pediatric medical devices.
Clinically, this tube is used when a cuff is not needed; for example in spontaneous breathing or when minimal airway resistance is critical. It reduces risks associated with cuffed tubes — like pressure injury or tracheal mucosa damage — especially when the patient does not require tight sealing for ventilation. However, because it is uncuffed, adequate sealing cannot be assured, so monitoring for air leak and choosing the correct tube size are critical. For patients who do require ventilation support or risk of aspiration, a cuffed model (such as Shiley PEF cuffed) may be more appropriate. Regular assessment of fit, cleanliness, and stoma condition is key to prevent complications such as granulation tissue or infection.
This medical supply or implant item is securely packaged within its original manufacturer's packaging, which remains undamaged. The inner and outer packaging is intact, ensuring the product's integrity and suitability for medical use.
