With an inner diameter of 5.5 mm, outer diameter of ~7.9 mm, and a tube length of about 46 mm from tip to flange, this size is toward the larger pediatric range but still smaller than typical adult tubes. The cuffless design allows air to leak around the tube, which can be favorable in spontaneous breathing patients, enabling natural airflow, easier phonation if vocal cords are functional, and generally reduced risk of pressure injury to the tracheal mucosa associated with cuffed tubes.

In terms of construction and comfort, the 5.5PEF includes design features intended to reduce irritation and support stoma care. The flange is soft, transparent, and designed to allow visualization of the underlying skin so that signs of redness or skin breakdown can be detected early. The trade‑offs include that absence of sealing via cuff means less protection against aspiration and possibly more work of breathing if there is excessive leak. Regular monitoring for tube fit, skin condition at stoma site, patency of the lumen (secretions), and comfort are essential to avoid complications.
