The Shiley 8UN85H is a flexible adult tracheostomy tube engineered to combine the sealing benefits of a cuff with improved patient comfort and easier care. With an inner diameter of 8.5 mm and outer diameter of 12.2 mm, it offers a relatively large airway channel, facilitating ventilation and reducing airflow resistance. The disposable inner cannula allows the inner lumen to be cleaned or replaced without removing the outer tube, which helps maintain patency and hygiene. Its length (79 mm) and flexible design make it suitable for typical adult neck lengths while allowing for safe placement and movement without irritation.
The standout feature is its TaperGuard™ cuff — unlike traditional barrel‑shaped, high‑volume cuffs, this cuff is low‑volume and tapered. The design provides a better seal with less pressure against the tracheal walls, which can reduce the risk of pressure injury, tracheal wall damage, and micro‑aspiration. According to bench testing, the cuff reduces fluid leakage by about 99% relative to older legacy cylindrical cuffs, and exerts ~18.6% less lateral wall pressure. The lower insertion force (≈ 39% less) makes for easier placement. The flange is soft, transparent and anatomically contoured, with features to reduce risk of skin breakdown around the stoma, such as openings for airflow and offset/transparent material allowing skin observation.
Clinically, the 8UN85H is appropriate when a sealed airway is needed — for example in patients on mechanical ventilation, or when there is a risk of aspiration. It helps enable good ventilator performance, with potentially less air leak, better ability to titrate cuff inflation, and may help in weaning or voice rehabilitation if conditions permit. Care must be taken in cuff management (ensuring correct inflation pressure, monitoring for leaks, avoiding overinflation), securing the tube properly, and regularly inspecting the stoma, flange, and inner cannula. Because of its enhanced design, it represents an evolution in tracheostomy tube tech focusing on patient safety and comfort without sacrificing function.
This medical supply or implant item is securely packaged within its original manufacturer's packaging, which remains undamaged. The inner and outer packaging is intact, ensuring the product's integrity and suitability for medical use.
