Covidien WPSM256 SurgiSleeve Small Wound Protector 2.5cm-6cm

The SurgiSleeve WPSM256 is a small‑sized wound protector and retractor designed for surgical incisions of about 2.5 to 6 cm, making it well suited for relatively small to moderately sized open or laparoscopic procedures. It consists of a thin yet durable film sheath connecting two rings: a flexible distal ring that is inserted into the incision, and a proximal (blue) ring which rests outside and can be rolled down or adjusted. This configuration allows the surgeon to retract the wound edges atraumatically, improve exposure of the operative field, and reduce risk of contamination from incision edges or surrounding skin.
One of its distinguishing features is the strength of its film material: bench tests report that the SurgiSleeve designs (including this small size) offer approximately three times greater puncture resistance compared to a competitor device (Alexis™ O) when measured under similar conditions and using the same film thickness. This means it is less likely to tear or perforate during manipulation of instruments, retractors, or during passage of laparoscopic devices. Additionally, its design allows adaptation to different abdominal wall thicknesses: the blue proximal ring can be rolled down or compressed; the sheath accommodates movement; the whole device is intended to be deployed quickly by a single operator.
Clinically, the WPSM256 offers benefits in reducing surgical site infection risk, protecting wound margins from desiccation or mechanical injury, and improving visualization during the procedure. Because the device is sterile and single‑use, it simplifies set‑up and reduces handling concerns. It is useful in a variety of surgical specialties — general surgery, thoracic, cardiac, gynecologic, colorectal — wherever a small incision needs protection. As with all wound protectors, correct sizing, careful insertion to avoid tissue trauma, and secure placement are important to realize these benefits.
