The DORC 92‑09 “Style 41, 3.5 mm Silicone Strip” is a medical device specifically designed for scleral buckling in retinal detachment surgery. The device is a non‑bioabsorbable silicone strip, 3.5 mm in width, intended to be placed on the sclera (the outer coat of the eye) to indent the globe so as to relieve vitreous traction and support reattachment of the retina. Being made of surgical‑grade silicone, the strip is biocompatible, soft yet sufficiently firm to maintain its shape under conditions of implantation, and designed for single use to ensure sterility and reduce risk of infection.
Packaged as a set of five sterile units, the 92‑09 Style 41 strip allows the retinal surgeon flexibility in selecting and placing the buckling material in multiple positions or for multiple eyes or cases without needing to open new packaging. The design ensures that each strip is consistent in its dimensions and mechanical properties, facilitating predictable buckling height and effect during surgery. Because the device is non‑absorbable, it remains in place long term unless removal is indicated, providing durable support for the reattached retina.
In use, the surgeon secures the strip around or onto the sclera using sutures, possibly with fixation sleeves or other anchoring methods. The thickness and width of the 3.5 mm Strip (Style 41) make it suitable for moderate indentation—balancing the need for sufficient buckle height with minimizing bulk, foreign body sensation, or potential compression of surrounding ocular structures. Overall, this device is a standard, well‑characterized option in the surgeon’s toolkit for retinal detachment repair when using external buckle techniques.
