The McKesson 159‑005 Size 5 laryngeal mask airway is intended to provide a secure airway conduit in adult patients (typically those between about 70–100 kg). Because it is curved, it more closely conforms to upper airway anatomy, allowing a gentler path of insertion and improved seating above the laryngeal inlet. Its inflatable cuff helps form an oropharyngeal seal, facilitating ventilation without the need for endotracheal intubation in many elective anesthetic or emergency airway management situations.

Made of medical-grade PVC and designed for one-time use, this LMA is delivered sterile and is intended to reduce cross‑contamination risk. The clear construction allows clinicians to visually inspect cuff inflation and detect obstructions or secretions more readily. The 40 mL maximum inflation volume provides a generous margin for achieving an adequate seal in adult anatomy, but in practice, inflation is titrated to create a seal without exceeding safe intracuff pressures (maximum ~ 60 cm H₂O) to avoid mucosal injury.

In practice, the McKesson 159‑005 is often used as a backup airway device or in “less invasive” airway strategies, particularly when intubation is not immediately necessary or feasible. Because it does not pass between the vocal cords, it avoids tracheal stimulation and may reduce the risk of airway trauma. However, it may not offer as tight a seal as a cuffed endotracheal tube, and careful monitoring of ventilation (tidal volumes, leaks, airway pressure) is still required. Its disposable nature simplifies logistics (no reprocessing) and helps maintain sterility in acute settings.
