The 81050 MEDPOR TITAN FAN‑MTB 1.0 mm implant is a hybrid reconstructive device combining the biologic advantages of porous polyethylene with the structural reinforcement of titanium mesh, tailored in a “fan” geometry and finished with a barrier surface on one side. The MEDPOR TITAN design philosophy balances flexibility, contourability, and strength: by embedding the titanium within a thinner polyethylene sheet, the implant can be more easily shaped while retaining sufficient rigidity to maintain contour and resist deformation over time. This approach also allows the implant to be thinner than a pure polyethylene equivalent, which is advantageous in tight anatomical spaces.
In practice, the porous side of the implant encourages fibrovascular ingrowth, anchoring the implant to surrounding tissue and helping long‑term stability. The barrier side helps to prevent unwanted adhesion or soft tissue infiltration on sensitive regions, such as interfaces adjacent to orbital contents or dura. The radiopacity conferred by the titanium mesh enables postoperative imaging to verify implant position and orientation, which is valuable in craniofacial, orbital, or skull base reconstructions.
Surgeons can trim, shape, and bend the implant intraoperatively to match patient anatomy, with less concern for sharp mesh edges because the titanium is encapsulated within the polyethylene matrix. The 1.0 mm thickness provides a compromise—thin enough to reduce bulk yet sufficient to maintain structural integrity and resist flexing. In indications such as orbital floor or medial wall reconstructions, the “fan” shape may facilitate coverage of curved, partial defects. The design aims to optimize contour, integration, imaging visibility, and ease of handling in craniofacial reconstructive settings.
