The Synthes 388.06 3.2 mm Quick‑Connect Tap is a precision surgical tool used in orthopedic procedures to prepare bone holes for insertion of 3.2 mm cortex screws. After drilling a pilot hole into cortical bone, this tap cuts threads matching those of the screw, ensuring the screw advances smoothly with precise engagement. Without proper tapping, insertion of screws can encounter excessive resistance, risk of stripping threads in the bone, or difficulty achieving desired fixation torque. The calibrated marking (50 mm) provides a visual indicator for depth, helping the surgeon ensure that the threads do not extend beyond intended depth, and that screws of appropriate length are selected.
The overall length of ~145 mm gives the instrument enough reach to handle deeper or less accessible anatomical sites while maintaining control. The quick‑connect coupling feature allows the tap to be used with a universal or matching handle which facilitates rapid swapping of taps, drills, and drivers during surgery without needing separate handles for each instrument. This streamlines operative workflow, reduces time, and minimizes fatigue or risk of mishandling in the sterile field. Because the tap is intended for cortex screws, thread pitch and profile are relatively fine and rigid, focused on gripping dense bone rather than cancellous bone.
Clinically, this tool is especially valuable in trauma, reconstructive, or fixation surgeries where precise alignment, stable fixation, and accurate screw placement are critical (e.g. in small bone or fragment fixation). Good maintenance and sterilization are essential; threads must remain sharp and free of burrs, the quick‑connect interface must engage cleanly without play, and the instrument should be inspected regularly for wear. Though marketed “new,” the instrument will still be subject to the limitations of all surgical taps: risk of bone heating, torque overuse, or being loaded incorrectly can lead to poor outcomes such as microcracking or screw pull‑out. Proper handling (cooling, gentle advancement, appropriate pilot hole size) maximizes performance.
This medical equipment item is in pristine condition, untouched and sealed within its original packaging from the manufacturer. It has not been used or tampered with in any way since leaving the factory.
