The Terumo 1SR*FF2419 SurFlash IV catheter is a fine-gauge, peripheral intravascular access device intended for delicate venous access tasks. Its 24‑gauge, ¾‑inch structure is suitable for small or fragile veins, such as those in pediatrics, geriatrics, or challenging venipuncture situations. Because it’s constructed of polyurethane, the catheter is relatively rigid at room temperature (for ease of handling and insertion) but softens with body warmth, improving comfort and reducing irritation in situ.

One of the distinctive features of the SurFlash line is its integrated flashback visualization mechanism. The specially grooved needle allows blood to enter a flash chamber between the catheter and needle during placement, giving clinicians immediate visual confirmation that the vessel has been cannulated before advancing the catheter. This approach helps reduce failed attempts or partial cannulations, especially in difficult access cases where the vein is not easily located.

In clinical practice, this catheter offers a blend of performance and simplicity. Its moderate lumen (ID ~0.47 mm) supports flow rates around 15 mL/min, adequate for many intravenous therapies in smaller patients. Because it lacks a built-in safety mechanism or blood-control valve, operators must handle and dispose of it with standard sharps precautions; the simpler design, however, can reduce mechanical failure points and cost. The product’s sterile packaging, clear visual confirmation capability, and flexible properties make it a useful option in settings demanding gentle access, such as pediatric wards, outpatient infusion, or general wards where smaller gauge access is appropriate.
