The TERUMO SURFLO 3SR‑OX2225CA (22G × 1″) IV catheter is designed as a general-purpose peripheral vascular access device, balancing ease of insertion with sufficient lumen size for typical IV therapy needs. Being 22 gauge offers a middle ground: it’s not so small as to severely restrict flow, yet it is small enough to be suited for many patients whose veins might not accommodate larger catheters. The 1-inch length is standard for peripheral IV placement in superficial veins.

To help the user during insertion, the catheter uses an ultra-sharp double-bevel introducer needle coated with a medical-grade lubricant, which reduces insertion resistance and assists smoother passage through skin and tissue. The clear preview chamber built into the hub allows immediate visual confirmation of blood flashback, which helps minimize misplacement or need for repositioning. The “sure-grip” hub aids control during insertion. These features combined support a higher success rate on first attempt.

From a flow and performance standpoint, the thin-wall ETFE catheter gives a relatively generous internal lumen (internal diameter ~0.64 mm), allowing flow rates up to about 35 mL/min under usual conditions. While the device lacks built-in valve (non-blood control) or needle retraction safety features (non-safety), its simplicity can reduce failure points and cost in many routine clinical settings. Its sterile, tamper-evident packaging and standard box quantities (50 per box, 4 boxes per case) make it convenient for use in hospital wards, outpatient infusion centers, and general clinical environments.
