The AR-1998CT-08 tap is a precision instrument designed for use with Arthrex’s BioComposite interference screw family during ligament reconstruction procedures of the knee (such as the anterior cruciate ligament and posterior cruciate ligament). In situations where bone is very hard, direct insertion of an interference screw may lead to excessive insertion torque, damage to the graft, or stress on fixation hardware. The tap serves to pre-thread or pre-tap the bone tunnel, creating a controlled pathway for the screw to engage smoothly. Because it’s sized for the 8 mm diameter screw family and uses the quick-connect interface, it integrates efficiently into surgical workflows and instrumentation trays.

In use, after the tunnel has been prepared (reamed, cleaned of debris, and irrigated), and the graft is seated appropriately, the surgeon may deploy the AR-1998CT-08 tap over the guide pin into the bone tunnel to establish the threaded path. This helps reduce screw insertion torque and ensures better seating of the screw system. The quick-connect design allows the tap to attach to the driving handle with minimal assembly, enabling streamlined surgical steps and reducing operative time. The tap’s matching to the BioComposite screw system assures compatibility of thread geometry, diameter and driver interface — factors critical to optimal fixation and long-term graft integration.

From a clinical and instrumentation management perspective, the AR-1998CT-08 tap contributes to reproducibility and consistency in ACL/PCL reconstructions by standardizing the pre-threading step when indicated. It helps protect the graft and bone by easing screw insertion, reducing risks such as screw stripping or graft damage. For surgical teams and instrument managers, incorporating the tap into the instrumentation set means fewer ad-hoc improvisations, better fit-for-purpose instrumentation, and smoother workflow. As with all reusable surgical instrumentation, proper cleaning, inspection (for any wear or damage), and sterilization per Arthrex’s instructions for use are essential to ensure safe, reliable performance.

These surgical instruments have been previously used and show visible signs of wear consistent with their prior usage. Despite these signs, they remain in a usable condition, suitable for continued medical procedures.
