The Piranha™ 3F Flexible Ureteroscopic Biopsy Forceps is engineered to provide urologists a reliable tool for endoscopic tissue sampling in the ureter and kidney. Its small 3 Fr jaw enables passage through narrow or tortuous segments of the urinary tract, while its 115 cm working length reaches deep within the collecting system. The deflectable cup jaw helps the surgeon to engage tissue under various angles, and the scissor-style handle gives good tactile feedback and control to open or close the cups. Because it is back-loadable, the forceps can be introduced through a ureteroscope without removal of the scope or needing extra assembly, helping streamline the procedure.
From a procedural perspective, the Piranha is especially useful when navigating complex ureteroscopic paths or accessing upper pole calyces within the kidney where space is limited and maneuverability is challenged. The small diameter reduces friction and impedance in the working channel, and its design allows the operator to advance, retract, deflect, and sample with precision. Once in position, the surgeon can actuate the cups, pinch off a tissue specimen, and then withdraw the instrument while holding the specimen. The cup design aims to provide a good grasp on soft tissue while minimizing crush artifact, which is essential when preparing the sample for histopathology.
In use, the device’s disposability ensures that sterility is maintained without the need for reprocessing, which reduces turnaround times and risk of cross-contamination. Because the forceps are optimized for flexible ureteroscopes and no additional assembly is needed during the procedure, they help reduce intraoperative workflow complexity. The Piranha is thus a versatile and robust choice in endourology where reliable sampling of urothelial or renal tissue is required without sacrificing access, maneuverability, or ease of use.
