The BSN 7395 Specialist Plaster Splint is essentially a rigid pre-cut strip of plaster-impregnated gauze designed to provide rapid immobilization for fractures, sprains, or other musculoskeletal injuries where a splint (versus a full cast) is sufficient. Because it is pre-cut to 5 × 30 inches, it offers a convenient size for many extremity applications (arms, legs) without needing to cut lengthy rolls on the spot. Once wetted (i.e. dipped in water), the plaster chemically begins curing; within about 5 to 8 minutes it hardens sufficiently to offer structural support while still allowing molding and shaping in the early period.

In use, a clinician (e.g. ER physician, orthopedist, or cast technician) would moisten the splint, squeeze out excess water, then apply it to the injured limb against a soft padding layer. The gauze backing aids in conforming the plaster to anatomical contours, while the plaster matrix gives rigidity. Because the product formulation is designed to minimize plaster loss (i.e. the plaster remains bound to the gauze) and limit exothermic heat, it helps ensure structural integrity, comfort, and safety (i.e. avoiding thermal burns). The moisture-resistant packaging helps prevent premature hydration or damage before the moment of use, preserving its performance.

In practice, these plaster splints are often used as initial immobilization devices, temporary stabilization tools between definitive casting, or ambulatory splints in outpatient settings. Their relatively fast set time allows the provider to mold and position the limb and then let the splint harden while retaining the desired alignment. The smooth finish, structural strength, and predictable performance make them suitable in acute care, urgent care, or orthopedic clinics. Because they are pre‑cut and standardized, they also streamline inventory, reduce waste, and speed splint application workflows.
