The Shiley 4DIC Disposable Inner Cannula is designed as a sterile, single‑use insert for compatible Shiley tracheostomy tubes. Because it's disposable and individually packaged, it eliminates the need for cleaning and sterilization between uses, simplifying care and lowering the risk of cross‑contamination. The integral 15 mm snap‑lock connector allows relatively quick and secure attachment to and detachment from the outer tracheostomy tube, facilitating convenient replacement during routine maintenance or in emergencies.
In use, the cannula occupies the airway lumen of the trach device, providing a clean inner passage for ventilation and airway clearance. When secretions build up or occlude the lumen, the worn cannula can be removed and swapped with a new one without removing the entire tracheostomy tube. This helps maintain airway patency and simplifies care. Because it is non‑fenestrated, it does not have holes or openings, so it maintains better control of airway gas flow (important when cuffed or mechanical ventilation is in use).
In hospitals and long‑term care settings, the 4DIC is stocked in boxes of 10 to ensure ready availability. Its latex-free construction supports use in patients with latex sensitivities. Over time, this disposable cannula design can reduce the labor and complexity of tracheostomy care by eliminating repeated cleaning steps and potential sterilization failures. Overall, the 4DIC is a practical, reliable accessory to support airway management when paired with compatible Shiley tracheostomy tubes.
