The 9CN90H tracheostomy tube is a cuffed, flexible adult-sized device from Medtronic’s Shiley™ line. It features a 9.0 mm inner diameter (ID) and a 12.7 mm outer diameter (OD), with a 79 mm length and comes with a disposable inner cannula, typically sized at 8.0 mm ID. Engineered with a TaperGuard™ low-pressure, low-volume cuff, it reduces fluid leakage by approximately 99% and exerts nearly 18.6% less lateral pressure on the tracheal wall compared to legacy barrel cuffs, improving seal performance while minimizing tracheal trauma.

Constructed of non‑DEHP PVC, the tube has a thermosensitive transparent outer cannula and beveled distal tip, designed to significantly reduce insertion force—by roughly 39% in benchtop models—while improving comfort and placement ease. The soft, clear recessed flange conforms gently to stoma anatomy, with optimized airflow openings to minimize skin contact and reduce breakdown risk around the stoma site. The integrated 15 mm connector supports standard ventilator and breathing circuit compatibility.

Clinically, the flexible design of the 9CN90H—with the cuff deflated—allows an average 242% increase in airflow around the outer cannula compared to older Shiley DCT tubes, easing work of breathing during weaning or speech trials. The disposable inner cannula helps facilitate hygiene maintenance and reduces biofilm-related airway resistance. While the TaperGuard cuff enhances seal and reduces aspiration risk, care teams should be aware that a 2025 recall issued by Medtronic involves Shiley Adult Flexible Tubes with TaperGuard and reusable inner cannula, due to potential flange-to-cannula disconnection risks. The 9CN90H model includes disposable inner cannula and did not have affected lots distributed in the U.S.
