The Cardinal Health Vistec™ X‑Ray Detectable Sponge, part number 7317, is a sterile, single-use 4″ × 4″ gauze sponge constructed to meet USP Type VII standards. Its 16‑ply thickness ensures high absorbency for surgical use, and it incorporates a dual-colored radiopaque strand—blue with a white core—that runs through the sponge in both directions. This element makes the sponge visible on x-ray imaging and easily identifiable by sight, even when saturated with blood.
These sponges undergo a precise double vacuum delinting process, resulting in exceptionally low lint levels—critical in surgical environments to reduce foreign body retention and contamination risk. They are paper-banded in sets of 10, packaged in sturdy polystyrene trays with peel-back lids, and integrated with electronic counting technology to ensure accurate tray counts every time.
Sold as a full case of 128 trays (1,280 sponges total), the product is latex-free and designed to support rigorous surgical counting protocols. Its radiopaque and visual features enhance patient safety by helping prevent retained sponges post-procedure. The combination of absorbency, visibility, and low-lint quality makes these sponges a trusted choice for operative services across various specialties.
