Covidien 8888264986 Salem Sump 18 Fr./Ch. Dual Lumen Stomach Tube 48" CS/50

A sterile, tube-like device that has a double lumen which is designed to establish a channel for the removal of fluids from a cavity by allowing air to enter the cavity through the smaller lumen which displaces fluid into the larger lumen. This is a single-use device.

The Salem Sump™ Dual Lumen Stomach Tube 18 Fr × 48″ (model 8888264986) is a commonly used nasogastric (NG) decompression device in adult patients requiring gastric suctioning, drainage, or lavage. Its dual‑lumen (sump) design differentiates it from single-lumen tubes by providing an atmospheric vent lumen that allows air ingress as gastric contents are evacuated. This venting maintains equilibrium and prevents the suction port’s eyelets from pressing tightly against gastric mucosa—an effect that could lead to tissue damage or vacuum injury.

In clinical use, one of the lumens is connected to a suction source for active drainage of gastric secretions, residual feed, blood, or fluid. Meanwhile, the vent lumen ensures that gastric pressure does not become excessively negative and also helps prevent the suction lumen from occluding against the stomach wall. The design also allows for irrigation or flushing (often via the vent lumen), facilitating patency of the system if clogging occurs. The inclusion of a radiopaque stripe (Sentinel Line™) helps clinicians confirm correct tube placement by imaging, reducing malposition risk.

From an operational standpoint, this tube is intended to be sterile and disposable, reducing cross‑contamination between patients. The integral funnel connector and 5‑in‑1 removable adapter facilitate rapid hook-up to suction tubing or clamps as needed. In situations such as abdominal surgery, obstruction, gastrointestinal bleeding, or critical care, the Salem Sump NG tube is a standard tool to decompress the stomach, reduce nausea or distention, prevent aspiration, and permit gastric lavage when needed. Proper management (e.g. intermittent suction settings, flushing, vent lumen integrity) is essential to maintain tube function, avoid complications, and ensure patient safety.
