Its dual‑lumen (sump) design differentiates it from single-lumen tubes by providing an atmospheric vent lumen that allows air ingress as gastric contents are evacuated. This venting maintains equilibrium and prevents the suction port’s eyelets from pressing tightly against gastric mucosa—an effect that could lead to tissue damage or vacuum injury.
