The Ethicon J418H Coated VICRYL® is a sterile, synthetic absorbable suture engineered for general soft tissue approximation and ligation. Because it is made from polyglactin 910 and is coated, it offers a smooth passage through tissue while maintaining good handling and knot-security characteristics. Its undyed (natural) color helps avoid pigmentation in more superficial or cosmetic closures where minimal visual footprint is desired.

The needle included with the J418H is an SH ½-circle taper point, measuring 26 mm. The taper point design allows gradual penetration of tissue with reduced cutting action, which is advantageous in delicate or friable tissues where minimizing trauma is critical. As a braided, coated suture, it balances pliability and strength, making it suitable for a broad range of soft tissue surgeries where absorbable support over the healing period is needed.

Over time, in the body, the J418H suture gradually loses tensile strength and is resorbed via hydrolysis, with absorption generally completed between 56 and 70 days. This profile allows the suture to provide wound support during the critical early healing phase, then be eliminated naturally without the need for removal. Its design is especially useful in internal soft tissues or in situations where permanent suture presence is not desirable.
