The Ethicon J494H Coated VICRYL 4‑0 Undyed is an absorbable braided suture made of polyglactin 910, designed for soft tissue approximation and ligation where a temporary, predictable support is required. Because it is braided and coated, it offers improved handling characteristics, smoother passage through tissue, and enhanced knot security compared to uncoated braided sutures. Its undyed form allows for use in situations in which dye might interfere with visibility or tissue response.

The suture is loaded on a P‑3 reverse cutting needle (13 mm, 3/8 circle), which is well suited for skin, fascia, or deeper soft tissue closures. The reverse cutting design helps resist suture pull‑through of tougher tissues, and the 3/8 curvature gives a compromise between ease of insertion and needle maneuverability. The filament length (18 in) is chosen to provide sufficient working length for most suturing techniques without excessive waste.

In use, J494H maintains tensile strength during the early phases of healing, supporting tissues for the first couple of weeks, then gradually losing strength as the wound matures and native tissue support increases. Because of its predictable absorption (complete by ~56–70 days), it avoids long‑term foreign body presence. This makes it appropriate for many general surgical, gynecologic, ophthalmic, and soft tissue closures (though not for neurologic or cardiovascular applications) where absorbable support suffices.
