The Kodak SP136 / 24 × 30 cm DirectView CR Cassette with GP Storage Phosphor Screen is a medium-format computed radiography cassette used in medical imaging workflows that employ CR (computed radiography) systems. The cassette houses a GP (General Purpose) phosphor storage screen that captures and stores a latent X-ray image when exposed to radiation. Later, in a CR reader, the stored energy is stimulated (commonly via a laser) and converted into light, which is then digitized to produce the radiographic image.
At 24 × 30 cm, the cassette is a versatile size—large enough to cover many standard anatomical regions (for instance chest, abdomen, or orthopaedic joints) yet not so large as to be unwieldy. Its dimensions correspond to a common 10 × 12 inch format, making it compatible with many CR systems configured for that size. The GP phosphor type is intended to offer a balanced performance in terms of sensitivity, spatial resolution, and image uniformity—ideal for general radiographic examinations rather than ultra-high-resolution tasks.
Because cassettes and screens undergo wear (e.g. scratches, delamination, handling damage, phosphor fatigue, ghosting), used and refurbished units are common in the surplus market—such as the ones I encountered in various listings. Care is necessary to inspect the cassette shell integrity, light-tight seals, and the condition of the phosphor surface. When properly maintained and handled, such cassettes remain serviceable in CR workflows, although image quality and consistency should be regularly checked (e.g. via phantom tests) to ensure that the aged phosphor does not degrade diagnostic output.
