The Kodak SP136 / 35 × 43 cm DirectView CR Cassette with GP Storage Phosphor Screen is a full-field computed radiography cassette designed to capture radiographic images across a large anatomical region (such as chest, abdomen, spine, or full skeletal views) in CR systems. In operation, the cassette’s internal phosphor layer stores the latent image upon exposure to X-rays; subsequently, a CR reader scans the cassette with a laser or stimulating light to release the stored energy as light, which is then digitized. The GP (General Purpose) phosphor is designed to balance sensitivity and spatial resolution, rather than optimize exclusively for high resolution or high speed.

Because of its larger size (35 × 43 cm), the cassette must maintain excellent mechanical rigidity, flatness, and light-tight integrity to avoid image degradation across the full surface. Any warping, bending, or damage to the cassette’s shell or phosphor surface can lead to artifacts, nonuniform response, or registration errors during readout. In purchasing or refurbishing, users must inspect the cassette shell, light-shielding seals, and the phosphor surface carefully. Due to the frequent handling and wear in radiology workflows, many such cassettes are traded in used or refurbished condition—as listed in several imaging equipment surplus catalogs.

In practice, while GP screens offer reliable performance for routine imaging, they are not typically pushed to extremes of spatial resolution or ultra-low dose. Over time, performance (sensitivity, uniformity, ghosting) can degrade through repeated use, handling wear, or phosphor fatigue. Therefore, CR facilities often monitor such cassettes using quality assurance phantoms and periodically replace or refurbish them as needed to ensure consistent diagnostic image quality across the large imaging area.
