The MXE Inc. 14″ × 17″, 8:1 grid cap is a protective encasement system designed for use in radiographic imaging setups to hold or protect an antiscatter grid over a standard 14×17 (35×43 cm) imaging cassette or receptor. The encasement ensures that the grid remains correctly aligned over the imaging area, shields the edges, helps maintain grid integrity during handling, and provides mechanical stability. Because of its size, it’s used for larger field imaging—e.g. chest radiographs, abdomen, general skeletal imaging—whenever scattered radiation needs to be minimized to enhance image contrast.

The 8:1 grid ratio is a moderate choice: it offers a balance between rejecting scattered radiation and not requiring excessive alignment precision or high exposure factors. With 178 lines per inch (a relatively high line density), the grid can help reduce visible gridline artifacts and maintain finer detail while still improving image contrast. The focal range (40–72 in) indicates that the grid is intended to be used at a variety of source-to-image distances (SIDs), giving flexibility in positioning. However, if the grid is misaligned or used outside of that focal range, one may see grid cutoff or uneven exposure.

Because grid caps are often used in demanding clinical environments, the physical build and durability matter. The quoted weight of 2 lb suggests a relatively robust housing. In actual use, radiology technologists must ensure that the grid cap is centered, level, and properly aligned with the x-ray tube to avoid artifacts or nonuniformities. Also, since these items are often sold used or surplus, inspection for damage (warped edges, cracked housing, bent grid strips) is critical before deployment. A properly functioning grid cap can extend the life of a high-quality grid and maintain image quality over time.
