In an orthopedic or emergency setting, the Stryker 0940 Cast Cutter is a powered oscillating saw used to section and remove rigid casts (plaster, fiberglass, synthetic). Its oscillating blade motion allows clinicians to score or cut through cast material without the blade continuously rotating, which reduces the risk of soft‑tissue injury beneath the cast. The dual‑speed control gives the operator flexibility: a lower speed for controlled cuts in delicate anatomical regions, and a higher speed for removing thicker or more robust sections of cast. The built‑in vacuum interface further enhances safety by drawing away dust and debris, improving visibility and reducing airborne particulates during the procedure.
The 940‑23 ion nitrided blade is matched to this cutter to provide enhanced durability, reduced heat buildup, and smoother cutting, especially in synthetic or composite casting materials. The ion nitriding treatment hardens the blade’s surface, helping it maintain sharpness over more uses and better resist abrasion. Because synthetic cast materials tend to generate more friction and heat during cutting, using a specialized blade like the 940‑23 helps mitigate risks of thermal injury to the patient or degradation of blade performance mid‑cut.
The Spreader 82 is a mechanical tool used after the cutting step to pry open the split cast halves. Once the cast walls are scored or cut, the operator inserts the prongs of the spreader into the gap and exerts force to gently widen or break the cast open along the scored lines. The 4‑tooth design provides broader, more controlled spreading compared to traditional 3‑tooth spreaders, enabling more efficient and safer separation of the cast without excessive stress or damage to adjacent soft tissue or padding. Together, the cast cutter, matched blade, and spreader form a coordinated kit that enables precise, safe, and efficient cast removal.
These surgical instruments have been previously used and show visible signs of wear consistent with their prior usage. Despite these signs, they remain in a usable condition, suitable for continued medical procedures.
