The MEDPOR BARRIER 8312 rectangular sheet implant is a dual‑surface reconstructive implant designed for craniofacial, orbital, maxillofacial, or skull base applications where controlled tissue integration is desirable on one side, but where prevention of adhesion or ingrowth on the opposing side is needed. The barrier side (non‑porous) faces tissues where you want to block attachment (e.g. dura, soft tissues), while the porous side allows fibrovascular in‑growth and integration into more favorable tissues such as bone or soft tissue scaffold. Because the barrier region is fused (heat bonded) to the porous substrate without adhesives, the implant maintains structural integrity while ensuring a clear interface on the barrier face.
From a handling standpoint, the 50 × 76 mm footprint and 1.0 mm thickness provide a balance: the sheet is thin enough to permit contouring, trimming, and fit in the surgical field, yet of sufficient thickness to maintain mechanical strength and resistance to flex under moderate loads. Surgeons can cut, shape, or bend the sheet (e.g. with scalpels or burrs) to conform to patient anatomy. The porous side encourages tissue integration, which over time can help stabilize the implant and reduce risks of displacement.
In clinical applications, this implant is useful in reconstructive procedures where one desires to prevent adhesion to sensitive structures (such as dura, nerves, or blood vessels) while still promoting integration elsewhere. The barrier sheet is especially helpful in layered reconstructions (e.g. cranial vault, skull base, or orbital wall repairs) where selective tissue ingrowth needs to be managed. Because it is sterile and single use, it is ready for intraoperative use, and the design supports both fixation with screws or plates (since MEDPOR tolerates fixation without cracking) and in situ tissue remodeling.
